The influence of the nuclear medium on inclusive electron and neutrino scattering off nuclei
2007
We present a model for inclusive electron and neutrino scattering off nuclei paying special attention to the influence of in-medium effects on the quasi-elastic scattering and pion-production mechanisms. Our results for electron scattering off Oxygen are compared to experimental data at beam energies ranging from 0.7-1.5 GeV. The good description of electron scattering serves as a benchmark for neutrino scattering.
The Electric Formfactor of the Neutron Determined by Quasielastic Scattering of Longitudinally Polarized Electrons from 3He and 2D
1996
The recent availability of polarized electron beams at electron accelerator laboratories adds another technique to probing the electromagnetic structure of nuclear matter [1]. The present paper discusses the application of polarized electron scattering to the determination of the electric formfactor of the neutron. Its value at medium energies is only poorly known hitherto. Electron scattering is dominated by interaction with the neutron magnetic moment. Therefore the contribution of the charge distribution to the scattering cross section is scarcely detectable in case of unpolarized collision partners. The elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized neutron ta…
Comparison of neutron and X-ray scattering of dilute myoglobin solutions.
1975
Experimental results obtained by neutron scattering of dilute solutions of myoglobin are compared with those obtained by X-ray scattering. X-ray scattering remains the more powerful technique at wider angles above 0.3 A−1, where neutron experiments are less accurate because of low coherent scattering probability and high incoherent background. Neutron scattering is preferable at momentum transfers below 0.2 A−1; the conditions for applying the contrast variation method for the evaluation of the three basic scattering functions, which are due to shape and internal structure, equation (3), are ideally fulfilled in this region. Furthermore, neutrons allow observation of the hydrogen-deuterium …

2019
Here we report the dynamics of organic cations as guest molecules in the novel perovskite host framework. The novel switchable crystals from the coordination family [CH3C(NH2)2]2[KB″(CN)6] were con...
Elastic and quasielastic neutron scattering studies in KBr:KCN mixed crystals
1989
Neutron scattering studies in (KBr)1–x(KCN)x mixed crystals are presented utilizing powder diffraction, single crystal diffraction and time-of-flight techniques. Forx>0.6 (KBr)1–x(KCN)x crystals exhibit ferroelastic and ferroelectric low-temperature phases. Crystals withx<0.6 undergo transitions into an orientational glass state. Here we present a detailed phase diagram including new results for x=0.85 and x=0.65. For the latter system a stable rhombohedral low-temperature phase has been detected where the orientational disorder of the plastic phase is only partly removed and quadrupolar relaxations between three body diagonals are still possible. From the powder diffraction experimen…
Anomalous pressure dependence of the structure factor in 1,4-polybutadiene melts: A molecular dynamics simulation study
2004
Neutron scattering has shown the first diffraction peak in the structure factor of a 1,4-polybutadiene melt under compression to move to larger q values as expected but to decrease significantly in intensity. Simulations reveal that this behavior does not result from loss of structure in the polymer melt upon compression but rather from the generic effects of differences in the pressure dependence of the intermolecular and intramolecular contributions to the melt structure factor and differences in the pressure dependence of the partial structure factors for carbon-carbon and carbon-deuterium intermolecular correlations. This anomalous pressure dependence is not seen for protonated melts.
Transverse Beam Spin Asymmetries at Backward Angles in Elastic Electron-Proton and Quasielastic Electron-Deuteron Scattering
2011
We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetries in elastic scattering of transversely polarized electrons from the proton, and performed the first measurement in quasi-elastic scattering on the deuteron, at backward angles (lab scattering angle of 108 degrees) for Q2 = 0.22 GeV^2/c^2 and 0.63 GeV^2/c^2 at beam energies of 362 MeV and 687 MeV, respectively. The asymmetry arises due to the imaginary part of the interference of the two-photon exchange amplitude with that of single photon exchange. Results for the proton are consistent with a model calculation which includes inelastic intermediate hadronic (piN) states. An estimate of the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for the scatt…
First measurement of the electric formfactor of the neutron in the exclusive quasielastic scattering of polarized electrons from polarized 3He
1994
Abstract A first measurement of the asymmetry in quasielastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized 3 He gas target in coincidence with the knocked out neutron is reported. This measurement was made feasible by the cw beam of the 855 MeV Mainz Microtron MAMI. It allows a determination of the electric formfactor of the neutron G E n independent of binding effects to first order. At Q 2 =0.31 ( GeV /c) 2 two asymmetries A ∥ ( S He ∥ q ) and A ⊥ ( S He ⊥ q ) have been measured giving A ∥ =(−7.40±0.73)% and A ⊥ =(0.89±0.30)% . The ratio A ⊥ / A ∥ is independent of the absolute value of the electron and target polarization and yields G E n =0.035±0.012±0.005.
Isostructural phase transition, quasielastic neutron scattering and magnetic resonance studies of a bistable dielectric ion-pair crystal [(CH3)2NH2]2…
2019
We have synthesised and characterised a novel organic–inorganic hybrid crystal, [(CH3)2NH2]2KCr(CN)6. The thermal DSC, TMA, DTG and DTA analyses indicate two solid-to-solid structural phase transitions (PTs). According to the X-ray diffraction experiments, the first PT at 220 K is isostructural, since it does not involve a change of the space group. This transition occurs between the states, where the (CH3)2NH2+ cations are orientationally disordered and ordered (frozen). The other reversible PT at 481 K leads to a melt-like phase similar to the one observed in plastic crystals or polar liquids. Dielectric spectroscopy has been used to characterise the switching properties of the dipole mom…
Diffusive motions in HD films physisorbed on graphite
2003
Abstract High-resolution quasielastic neutron scattering was used to study diffusive motions in two-dimensional liquid and solid phases of deuterium hydride submonolayers adsorbed on graphite (Papyex). For the first time it could be unambiguously clarified that the novel reentrant fluid phase at the commensurate–incommensurate transition has the character of a viscous fluid.
